Today was a great day because it ended by purchasing an entire Key Lime Pie to-go, with homemade whipped cream. This was from my favorite restaurant in Key Largo, FL, described later how this pie compares with others throughout the Keys.
With more than 20 years of Key Lime Pie tasting, I consider myself to be somewhat of an expert. Normally having 6 different Key Lime Pies during the week we’re in Key West, I thought it would be interesting to compare pies and rate them. If you will, a kind of Urbanspoon of Key Lime Pie. The tour started where it ended. After picking up my wife and daughter at the Miami airport, we stopped at Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen, MM99.4, in Key Largo, where we have stopped for nearly 20 years. We learned of Mrs. Mac’s from a journal, a long time ago. After the long trip from Minneapolis, we always know that we have arrived in the Keys once we get to Mrs. Mac’s in Key Largo. Very down-home, unassuming and full of locals, we always start with the Fish Dip. Fresh, caught earlier in the day, it’s a great starter. The entrees are very good, but dessert is the main course – Key Lime Pie of course.
We also broke down and ordered the Peanut Butter Pie. It’s been many years since we have ordered it, and we all wished we didn’t. They must have changed the recipe to make it more tolerable to the masses. It was much creamier and lighter than it had been. I remember having my breath, and saliva taken away after my first bite of Peanut Butter Pie. It was so good, but deadly. After sharing a single piece, it felt like we each gained 10 pounds. Don’t waste calories on the updated Peanut Butter Pie at Mrs. Mac’s.
The Key Lime Pie was as good as we had remembered. Mrs. Mac’s has always been in our Top 3; great crust, nice tart filling with homemade whipped cream. What’s not to like?!? Featured in the October 2004 Cosmopolitan, their Key Lime Pie is one of the best.
